Jomo Kenyatta’s firstborn son Peter Muigai Kenyatta (1920-1979) with Jomo’s first wife Grace Wahu.
Peter Muigai Kenyatta (pictured) was a Member of Parliament for Kenya’s Juja constituency and an Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs under Jomo Kenyatta.
He was a successful businessman as well. Peter Muigai Kenyatta reportedly showed up for a meeting with his father, President Jomo Kenyatta, drunk and late. He’d been keeping his father waiting for around two hours.
Jomo remained calm and collected, never losing his cool or raising his voice.

Jomo then told his drunk son, Peter, in Kikuyu, in the presence of then-Commissioner of Police Bernard Hinga and then-CID Director Ignatius Nderi, that he was “fortunate” to be able to behave as he liked since he had a “great man,” a wealthy father. Jomo then told Peter that he, unlike Peter, did not have a “great father” or a wealthy father. As a result, he was “unlucky.”
Peter Muigai Kenyatta immediately stopped drinking after hearing Jomo’s words, vowing to remain a teetotaller for the rest of his life.
