On Tuesday, July 29, ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna announced that the party had decided to formally leave the National Super Alliance (NASA).

After Wiper made the first move, the orange party is the second NASA partner to abandon the coalition.

Sifuna said in a statement that the party met on Thursday, July 29, and reached the decision in its search for new friends.

Part of the statement states, “We intend to embark on a program to develop new alliances and expand the continuing negotiations with our potential partners to the grassroots.”

Sifuna also denied rumors that the ODM had given monies to the coalition’s other party allies in an effort to persuade them to stay.

“As a result, statements attributed to our former partners that the offer was somehow a vindication of their long-standing grievance and that the same was made in a desperate attempt to keep them in the Coalition are deeply disturbing to the party. Nothing could be further from the truth.”

Sifuna went on to say that the party discussed the future and the need for new partnerships.

“As a result, regional meetings and engagements with like-minded parties have been planned,” he concluded.

NASA would cease to exist if at least three constituent parties formally exited, according to the coalition agreement between the partners.

Since 2018, the NASA coalition has had issues because of mistrust and competing interests among the parties, including the Wiper Democratic Movement, ODM, ANC, and Ford Kenya.

The news came just one day after ODM leader Raila Odinga bowed to public pressure and agreed to share political party finances with fellow NASA Principals.
