Deputy President William Ruto has spoken out about the remarkable events that occurred at Wilson Airport on August 2 that prevented him from leaving the country.
Although evasive, the Deputy President revealed the intrigues surrounding his canceled travel to Kampala in an interview on Inooro FM on Wednesday, August 4.
Ruto claimed that the decision to deny him leave power was politically motivated in response to emerging leadership disputes between him and pro-President Uhuru Kenyatta allies.
He claimed that President Trump’s friends acted intentionally in order to frustrate and humiliate him as a person and as the Deputy President.
The DP went on to explain that the decision to block him was made to incite hostility between him and the President, but that he would not go through with it.
“As a person, I am entitled to my rights. I am very aware of my position as the country’s DP. “This is the first time I’ve ever been requested to obtain permission and clearance from the individuals and offices mentioned,” Ruto stated.
“When did I start asking for permission? I’ve been the DP for nine years and have traveled extensively throughout East Africa and the rest of the world without ever being asked for approval. Why does it have to begin on Monday?”
Ruto cited the purge of his allies in Parliament, the National Government, and the Jubilee Party, saying that his team has been subjected to a slew of frustrations in recent years. He also acknowledged that he was cut off from Uhuru’s inner group.
According to the DP, this strategy was hatched long ago after Uhuru and Raila Odinga, the leader of the ODM, made a gentleman’s agreement in the historic March 2018 handshake.
Raila’s marriage to Uhuru, he claimed, had a negative impact on his (Ruto’s) relationship with Uhuru. He lamented, however, that his opponents had crossed lines by failing to distinguish between government and personal issues.
“They are now preventing me from conducting my personal affairs. I wasn’t going to Uganda on a mission for the government. No! He explained, “I was going to talk about my personal concerns and future ambitions.”
“I halted my voyage and continued on my way. What was supposed to happen in Uganda didn’t happen because I wasn’t there. The world has changed. I will not allow myself to be used to incite political strife. These people (said adversaries) have constantly sought to blame me, claiming that I am battling the President, competing with him, and so on.”
He said, “Namwachia Mungu!” (I leave it to God).
The DP argued that Kenyans do not require visas or passports to travel to Uganda, and that the two countries benefit from free trade and movement, and that Kenya was regressing by prohibiting him from visiting his neighbor.
He also clarified reports that he was in the company of a controversial Turkish businessman.
“The Turkish Embassy issued a statement stating that the individual in question is a businessman. Take a look at how we’ve embarrassed ourselves as a country by requiring the Turkish Embassy to respond. What is the investor’s reaction to such ideas? This is how we annihilate our own country,” Ruto remarked.
