Moses Kuria, a Member of Parliament from Gatundu South, has revealed how lawmakers were often summoned to State House and bribed to turn a blind eye to issues.
The sessions will overlap with Parliamentary debates on the country’s annual budget, the outspoken legislator said on Citizen TV’s Newsnight on Tuesday, September 7.
He also mentioned that they would be given gifts during the sessions and told to pass the budget as is.
Kuria also said that the gifts they received were to blame for the country’s growing international debt.
“I was a member of the budget committee from 2014 until last year, when I was rudely booted out, so I was privy to a lot of what was going on in this country since 2014. Kenyans would have expected me to act as a watchdog who would have prevented those events from occurring.”
“What used to happen is that every year before we passed the budget, both members of Jubilee and NASA (National Super Alliance) led by ODM chair, John Mbadi, would be summoned to state house and given goodies for our constituencies before being told to “shut up and go and pass everything the way it is,” said Kuria.
Kuria was defending a startling statement he made in 2019 in which he claimed that the government and Parliament had been lying to Kenyans about the debt for the past seven years.
He further stated that he made the bombshell claims in order to clear his name in the eyes of Kenyan taxpayers.
”We have deceived Kenyans, and we have also failed in our monitoring responsibilities. Since 2014, we’ve been selling Kenyans the romantic fiction that everything is OK because we believe in honoring the Executive and because the majority of us are members of the ruling party.”
“We are in this hole because, as Parliament, we had the option of saying No, but we chose to say Yes. So, on behalf of Parliament, I want to express my unequivocal regret to the people of this country, because we have failed them by selling them lies that everything is fine,” Kuria declared at the time.
Kenya’s overall debt had reached Ksh7.7 trillion as of July 2021, according to estimates from the Central Bank of Kenya and the National Treasury, with the government accumulating Ksh1 trillion in a year.
According to the data, the country’s external debt will have surpassed Ksh4 trillion by June 2021, while domestic debt will have reached Ksh3.7 trillion.
